When ending quotes does the period go before or after the end quote?

In the US, always always inside the quotation marks. In more logical places in the world, it goes inside if what is quotes is a complete thought. " Elsewhere: I said "left".

Elsewhere: I said "left". I said "Turn to the left."

Hi GG,
Nice to see that in writing again. That's the way I learned it a few years back (comma, too), but I get the impression many native US posters don't agree.

It's totally illogical, but it's one rule that has no exceptions, so it's easy to follow.
