"as well as" verb + ing?

In a sentence such as:

"Philosophy 101" is an excellent basic course that discusses general philosophical principles as well as providing specific examples of their application.

Should the word following "as well as" be "provides" or "providing"? "Providing" sounds better to me, but I wonder if it should be "provides" to be consistent with the previous "discusses."

Since as well as isn't a preposition or a conjunction, I would say: "Philosophy 101" is an excellent basic course that discusses general philosophical principles and provides specific examples of their application as well . CB

Thank you ... interesting ... so "as well as" can't be used in the way I used it in the original sentence?

This is not correct: the gerund, or '-ing' form, of the verb is used in this context after 'as well as'. There is nothing wrong with the original sentence: 'Philosophy 101 is an excellent basic course that discusses general philosophical principles as well as providing specific examples of their application.'
