"as well as"

What does "as well as" in the following sentence mean?

One day chimps will play chess as well as humans.

Is this sentence grammatically correct? If so, what does it mean?

1) One day chips' chess skill level will catch up to the human chess skill level.

2) One day chips will play chess and so will humans.
