"...as very important were the staples with..." Used figuratively?

Hi again,

Other items viewed as very important were the staples with 53 percent of respondents wanting adequate income, 51 percent saying it was very important to have good housing, and 49 percent putting shared religious beliefs on the list. http://www.reuters.com/article/lifestyleMolt/idUSN2036827920070720?src=072007_1906_ARTICLE_PROMO_also_on_reuters

I was wondering what it was referring to by 'staples'. I think the word 'staples' has been used figuratively here to mean something like finanical status. What do you think?

Thank you. Emotion: smile

Best wishes,

PBF

Thanks for replying to my post, Philip.

So does the basics mean income in that sentence?

Thanks again for your help.
