Grammar

"a" or "an"

I thought that we use "an" in front of a word starting with a vowel.
The Microsoft Word grammar tool corrects my typing of "an unitary structure"
to "a unitary structure". Which one is correct?

Thanks. Alice

'An' in front of a vowel sound . The letter used to represent it is irrelevant. 'Unitary' is pronounced /'ju:niteri/, thus beginning with a consonant sound.
