I think Mark Twain is stating that people who succeed are people that are too "stupid" to know better. Sometimes knowledge makes one too aware ... and focus on the pitfalls of any challenge... once you focus your mind on something... inevitably you get it... To succeed you need to be "ignorant" of the facts(limits) and focus on achieving your goals

I've often been reminded of this quote on seeing certain people, people who are not intellectually curious, people who don't torment themselves with self-doubt, people who do before they think, succeed and climb the ladder -- in my own workplace, and on the world's stage.

It's amazing how poorly most people understand simple english. The quotation is indeed written to be ironic. He is saying that if you are stupid and overconfident then you will be convinced of your own success.

It was a jab at idiots, not some biblical formula for success or motivational speech.

I tend to interpret this as ignoring anything that may cause you to care about things other than your own success, such as ignoring the fact that child labor might be used in producing cheap products that (as an example) your company may profit off of.
