"after" as a conjunction

Once he was convinced of the necessity of the move, he worked with persistence and diplomacy until the college found a new home.

The above examples are direct quotes from Collins Cobuild English Grammar and illustrate the relationship finite and non-finite
subordinate clauses.

My question is about "after" used as a conjunction in a non-finite subordinate clauses.

After being imported from Europe more than 300 years ago, honeybees have spread throughout the country and are now responsible for the pollination of some 15 percent of crops grown.

As far as grammar is concerned, both of the above sentences are equally correct. Aren't they?

After imported doesn't work. The various subordinators are restricted to the types of clauses they can introduce. After cannot introduce -ed nonfinite clauses, whereas when and once can.

  • For instance, in -ing nonfinite clauses, after will take a subject, but when does not: After my opening the box, all the vanities emerged.

Some grammarians think that after, before and since are better classified as prepositions in this situation. Pinenut, but it is by no means unanimous. Welcome to English Forums.
