"a couple of"

Hello, what exactly does "a couple of months" mean ?

does it mean 2 months (exactly two months...COUPLE means 2)
or
does it mean a few months 2...maybe 3 or 4... ?

Sometimes I hear people say "a couple months". Is it correct ? Or is it just that I don't hear the word "of" ?
