M1: My son came to visit me the other day.

M2: You don't say. What for?

What does " You don't say." imply to?

I am wondering what the story is behind " you don't say."?

I don't know the story behind the idiom. com says it's from the late 19th century and a shortening of you don't say so : You don't say : How surprising, is that true? Also, I find that hard to believe.
