Quite the contrary

Hi teachers, please help me understanding what the meaning of "quite the contrary" is in sentence as follow:
It was no novelty to encounter suspicious specimens among Holly's callers, quite the contrary; but one day late spring, while passing through the brownstone's vestibule, I noticed a very provocative man examining her mailbox.

In addition, I've looked for the idiom in dictionary, found that it's used to emphasize that the opposite of what has been said is true, but I haven't understood the meaning of the sentence above yet.

As you found, "quite the contrary" means the opposite of something, in this case the statement that Holly's callers are not novel. (Novel meaning noteworthy/interesting.)

To simplify, it means, "It was no novelty to encounter suspicious specimens among Holly's callers; it was very common."

I hope this helps.
