I 'd like to know whether QUITE means "pretty", whether it means "extremely". Please consider 2 examples: 1. He sang the song quite well (He sang the song pretty well) 2. The meal was quite awful (The meal was extremely awful)

Yes well done, you've managed to distinguish between the different meanings of 'quite'. It can be a tricky word.

I think its safest to assume that quite means "pretty" or "reasonanably". It is used in the context you describe (eg "the meal was quite awful"), but I think there is usually an element of irony when it is used this way.
