Quick Review.

I have written the following.

.....however, the younger, more confident ones would yell things like '*****' and '*****' but I had zoned out.

Do I need to enter a comma before 'but' in this instance?

I would say you do, but it's hard to be sure unless you show us the complete sentence. Clive

Sorry.

It actually goes:

They would yell things like '......' and '.......' but I had zoned out.

If I were to put a comma in how would I do it.

Would I be as such:

They would yell things like '......' and '.......', but I had zoned out.

Thanks.

What about if I were to write:

Words like 'psychopath' and 'freak' were being bandied about with worrying regularity.

I assume it's a bit different for the above sentence and it's right not to have a comma before 'were'?

Yes -- no comma.
