Quick grammar question

I have a question about grammar. One guy tried to translate some sentences from my language into English and I get confused with one of them.
this is a sentence:

"Target group of our research is children."

like for me it should be 'are' instead of 'is' but I never was good with grammar.Could anyone one tell me if this sentence is correct?

Thank you

"The target group" is singular and can be replaced by "it". "Of our research" can be left out The target group is children. It is children.
