Questions with and without an auxiliary verb?

Please explain what's the difference between questions: "Who went home?" and "Who did go home?". When can we make questions without an auxiliary verb? Thanks.

"Who went home?" is the normal way of asking this question.

"Who did go home?" would have emphasis on "did", and would be used when that extra emphasis was required, such as:

A: Did Sarah go home?
B: No.
A: Did Charlotte go home?
B: No.
A: Well then, who did go home?
