questions on tense

Hi,

1. Does this modal "would" denote past-ness or present-ness(I don't know these 'ness' words are correct or acceptable words)? I think the time frame is in the present, not in the past.

I gave him my word that it would never happen again.

2. Please take a look at two pair of sentences and tell me if you sense no awkarwdness or feel they are incorrect.

1. I graduated from XXX University and was nominated (they nominated me -- better?) the "Best Student" at my last year.
2. He has graduated early in my teens from XXX University and worked (has worked -- better?) in the field of mechanical engineering for some time before assuming a more prestigeous job.
