Questions on conditionals

Hi. Would you help me with what I think are conditional problems?

1. Is it incorrect (possibly strange?) to have the underlined conditional structure in the following context? The situation reflects just one party's talking eventhough it supposed to be a conversation between two people. Should the underlined part be "what I would have done if I had been asked"? Does the underlined part reflect the wondering in the past or in the present? (If I asked the question correctly to reflect what I wanted to say).

Made-up situation:

(talking to another person)

Hi. John. You know what? I saw a beggar on my way to the subway today. He was sitting barefoot on the street and asking passerbys for change. You might wonder what I would do if I were asked. Wonder no more. I will tell you. The beggar did ask me for change as I was passing by and I handed him some change I had in my pocket...

Also would you say the word "barefoot" is an adjective and not an adverb? If it is, can you tell me how could it be?

2. Is this correct?

None of this would have been possible if it weren't for you.

I feel the structure has to be something like this. Then I feel something has to come after the last word in the sentence answering the question "it hadn't been for you what?" in order for the sentence to make sense

None of this would have been possible if it hadn't been for you.
