Please tell me why the use of commas is correct (if they are)? For no. 1, let us assume the XXX's represent names of countries. For no.2, I feel (if I am not wrong) the part left of the comma and the right of the comma could be one whole sentence without the comma being there. What would you say?
1. His effort has been to awaken the hearts of people from XXX to XXX and from XXX to XXX, to raise their support for this issue.
2. He has done what his parents hated, by squandering his small fortune.
