Questions involving the use of articles

Hi. Please help. Let's say that there is a teacher trying to write a goal or aim statement for a lesson that involves students looking at a given newspaper article and write a short summary afterward. How should he/she write the statement below? Do you have any others better?

Students will be able to analyze a (the?) (given?) newspaper article and then write a short summary.

As for the question below, I think I asked this question before in this forum but received an answer that is not pertinent. (I appreciated the help, though.) Anyway, when the answers are more than one. Could this be the correct question? Could the phrase "the following" refer to more than one? Thank you in advance.

Hi, Thank you. Is this incorrect when it is assumed that the person went to one middle and high school in the past?
