Questions about the use of "their" (thanks for the help!)
To all of you grammar experts out there....
Please tell me if the following sentances are grammatically correct.
"We work with the client to discover their true needs."
It seems to me that "client" and "their" should be the same tense....So should it be "We work with the client to discover his true needs."? But in an advertisement-type situations does this then seem to exclude female clients? Is the word "client" always thought of in a singular tense? I suppose an "easy" fix on this particular sentance could be "We work with our clients to discover their true needs."
Also:
"The client needed graphic design work for a logo and on-line ordering for their web site."
Same issue here? Should it be "...for his (or her) website."? Is it OK to use "their" in this sentance, when it is talking about a specific (singular) client? How can this sentance be improved?
Thanks for taking the time to pass along any suggestions!
