Questions about the usage of articles.

Hi, i'm an international student who's a junior in high school now.
I have been studying in states for 3 years, and i've gotta say, my English has improved greatly since i came here.
But one thing that i always have had problems with since i started using English is the usage of articles.
The questions that i'm going to ask here are about the basic usage of articles.

For historical events, such as the industrial revolution, the revolutionary war, the Korean War, the emancipation proclamation, etc. Is there always the in front of them?
What if what i am talking about is historical movements like the Romanticism, or Renaissance? Do you put the in front of them as well?
Also, i have problem deciding whether to use articles in front of abstract nouns.
When you are talking about general history, do you say the history or just history?
When you discuss about some dictatorship in a random foreign country (not a specific one) do you say the dictatorship? or just dictatorship.
Same for all these abstract nouns like knowledge, wisdom, fear, liberty, etc. when do you use thes in front of them and when do you not use them?

I'm writing an essay on the Romantic movement for English class, and though i feel like i have done pretty well with the usage of articles, i can always find mistakes here and there.

Thanks for reading my questions and i appreciate any kind of help.

With regards,

Ryan

  • Romanticism is not a period, it is a style, so no 'the'; however, it was to the fore during the Romantic movement.
