Questions about TESOL programs - different flavors

I went to a Columbia University (at the School of Continuing Education, not Teacher's College, and it's close to $10K!!) information session for their 8 week summer TESOL intensive program. This is not an MA or MA track program, and though there is some NY certification for teaching to adults, I'm a little vague on just what.
Well, here's my question. Is this program specifically or this type of program generally useful if I want to find work:? I'm interested in the topic(s) and also interested in travel/teaching but it's not my primary pursuit - I'm a painter - but I would consider going on to a master's program somewhere else if I find the pursuit stimulating enough. Is there a place I can get a good summary of the different types of TESOL programs (all levels, all types). Or does anyone have any infomation about either this program in particular or other approaches to take in either the New York (preferably) area or SF?

Thanks in advance
