questions about sentence structure/ part of speech?

Fortunately, after a long night of protests and clashes with police, many arrogant demonstrators under the age of 20 remain peacefully on the streets.

I suppose "after a long night of protests and clashes with police" is the subordinate clause.
I am wondering if "after" in this clause acts as a preposition or adverb. I guess it is a preposition but I am not sure.
if "after" really is a preposition here, can I say "after a long night of protests and clashes with police" is a prepositional clause? (because the head is preposition -- "after")

Top answer

"after" is a preposition. "after a long night of protests and clashes with police" is an adverbial prepositional phrase (not clause). "arrogant", which has strong negative connotations, does not seem to fit the tone of the rest of the sentence.
