Questions about one paragraph

Hi guys, this is new from VOA. I underlined something i didn't understand. Please explain it for me. Thanks ^^

"South Korean Presidential Secretary Baek Jong-chun says the two leaders also signed on to a more far-reaching goal. Reading directly from the pact, Baek says the two put their signatures to a process that could lead to North Korea abandoning all of its nuclear programs."

I didn't why they used gerund" abandoning" here and i feel the phrase " North Korea abandoning all of its nuclear programs" need to be arranged again all the words to be clearer, right ?I understand this phrase but i felt the arrangement of all words made me a bit confused.

The clause is in the standard structural arrangement, and the -ing form is appropriate here (although an alternative structure, ' abandonment of ' is also available). Strict grammarians, however, would require the possessive Korea's : ... a process that could lead to North Korea's abandoning all of its nuclear programs .
