Questions about omitting relative pronouns and relative clauses!

Is this sentence: "We invited some guests who were late" correct and I'm confident we can't omit the pronoun because it's just wrong. Is it because there's no pronoun/ noun before the verb "were" and is it necessary to have some pronoun or noun in relative clause?

Correct. You can't omit the pronoun when it's the subject of its clause. A relative clause must have an explicit subject.

guests [ [who]subj [were late]pred ]rel clause

guests [ [who(m)]d.o. [we]subj [invited]verb
