Questions about hotel california

in my understanding, "check out" means "leave". (I am not English speakers)

why in the lyric of Hotel California, there is a text "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave"

When I come to a hotel, I check in. When I leave a hotel, I check out. Isn't 'check out' and 'leave' the same thing?

I can understand the overall meaning of the whole song but this expressions has made me a little bit doubtful.
