Questions About A Quote Of A Story.

Hi all,

this part is a quote from a story. Although it's short but I stopped on several things about it.

In the beginning of it, it was written like this:

" In a nest, In a tree, in a garden a nightingale sang. Her song was beautiful: she sang of love and happiness."

1) Is it fine in English to write like the highlighted text?

2) Can I replace "in" with "on" in the tow first terms by saying: "On a nest, on a tree, in a garden". If so, would it make a difference in meaning?

3) Can I put a comma after the word "garden"? If so, which is better, with a comma or without it?

4) Is it correct to put ":" after "beautiful"? I see to put ";" instead, I'm I right?

Thanks in advance

anonymous Is it fine in English to write like the highlighted text? The language is fine, except that it is the male nightingale who sings. I would format it differently: "In a nest, In a tree, in a garden, a nightingale sang.
