You can ask that instead of "How old are you?" but to me it sounds like you're an official of the government talking to someone who is applying for some kind of license, e.g., a marriage license.

In other words "What is your age?" sounds more offici

In Canada, In everyday conversation, we usually avoid asking such questions. They are culturally quite taboo

It's good to know that. I study English as a second language. When we start learning a new language, we're usually taught to say certain things and ask questions in a particular way and many times teachers don't give us other possibilities so that when a native speaker says something different than what we're used to hearing, we have difficulty understanding.
