It is not neccessary to do so, actually.

I might be a way to buy time for the answerer to think of an answer. Something like:

"Where have you been all night?"
"Well, I have been all night because... because... erm...."

But generally, we do not need to do this, especially written replies (in comprehension questions in exams.), since you would have time to think
