Question with "How"

Hello, everybody! Could you please help me with this question: We spent the evening playing chess last night. (Make question for the underlined phrase) So far I have just known only one way to make this question i.e. “How did you spend the evening last night?”. How can I explain that this is the only way to do this exercise? To tell you the truth, I have problems with making question with “How” and I have searched the web a lot without finding detailed explanation of using this kind of question, especially “How + aux V + S + main V…?” Thanks in advance.

Dear Mr. Clive
I am badly in need of the explanation of the reason why "how" should be/ must be used here to answer for the question:
We spent yesterday evening playing chess.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

Consider this simple example.
Tom walked slowly.

'Slowly' is an adverb. It describes the manner Tom walked, the way Tom walked.
When you ask a question about the manner , use 'How. .

How about "What did you spend yesterday evening doing?"

Hi,

Yes, that is often said in such a context.

But it won't work quite so well with eg 'Tom played carefully yesterday evening.'
