Question ... The couple are going to dinner OR The couple is going to dinner???

Which is correct and why?

In this sentence, "couple" is singular yes?

My English skills SUCK and I have decided that I am going to LEARN my own damn language. Sorry for the short nature of this question, I will try and write more in the future.

Normally singular, but both are possible-- it depends on how it is / they are conceived by the speaker: 'The couple next door is going out to dinner. ) 'The couple next door are fighting again. )

'The couple next door is going out to dinner. (One couple acting as a unit.)
'The couple next door are fighting again. (Two people having a disagreement.)
