Hi.

Our English teacher told us about the exception that we have to say

I am right this time, aren't I (instead of impossible amn't I)

However, I'd like to know which non-contracted form should I use.

I am right this time, am I not? (sounds logical to me) or
I am right this time, are I not? (following from the previous exception).

And by the way, is ain't allowed?

Thanks.

I am right this time, am I not? - is the correct version. If you are writing direct speech and wish to use slang 'ain't' can be used.

  • If you are writing direct speech and wish to use slang 'ain't' can be used.
  • In formal prose 'ain't' would be innappropriate.
