Question related to Direct and Indirect speech

Hi

I have a question about this sentence.

She said, "Are you an American?"

Here, in the direct speech, is it a standard practice to use only say as the reporting verb?

Can't we say " She asked, "Are you an American?"

I am used to using asked only in indirect speech.

She asked if I was an American.

Please give your views.
