Question regarding commas within quotes
I'm looking to see which sentence would be correct for what I'm trying to do/explain. The original s
1. The Venn diagram has 3 circles with "Megan," "Lauren," and "Marie" written above each circle.
or
2. The Venn diagram has 3 circles with "Megan", "Lauren", and "Marie" written above each circle.
I believe the proper, grammatical way would be sentence 1 but here is my problem. On the actual Venn diagram, it would say Megan not Megan, but i'm not 100% that's clear by the way I put it in quotes. It doesn't seem like it would be correct if i put The Venn diagram has 3 circles with "Megan", "Lauren", and "Marie" written above each circle.
I know commas and periods go inside of quotes but since I'm saying how the actual Venn diagram would look, I don't want there to be confusion about it saying Megan, when it should just say Megan
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

First, I don't think the sentence is right in concept. I doubt that all three names are above each circle which is what is implied by the sentence. Second, yes commas go inside the quotes but I agree it is awkward.

Anon, the question of whether the comma goes inside the quotation marks or outside is a matter of style. Illogical though it is, in the US, the comma always goes inside the quote. In the UK, it would go outside.
