Question out of a error-identifying question

The question goes as below:

"The startling is such a pest in rural areas that it has become necessary to find ways of controlling the growth of their

A B C D

population."

And it requires the test takers to recognize errors that occur at the underlined parts of the sentence.

The answer is D, which is supposed to be "of its" instead of " of their."

But I still wonder how come part A is not erroneaus,

since it should be "such a common" in my opinion.

Top answer

The bird is a starling . There is no need to add 'common' to 'pest'; therefore, A is fine. Why would you think that you need to add an arbitrary adjective?

  • You could just as well call it 'an irritating pest', 'an egregious pest' or 'a ubiquitous pest', but those would not make A more correct.

Not possible, chivalry. The structure is 'such a + noun + that'.
