Hi. Thank you.

If what John Doe said is "Jane and Joe usually don't do much on Tuesdays," isn't it correct to put them in quotes when a person has started his sentence with a phrase like "according to John Doe"? I think he is quoting word for word?

You wrote/corrected:

According to John Doe, Jane and Joe usually don't do much on Tuesdays

Oh I see. If you are quoting John Doe word-for-word, then it is better to write:

John Doe said, "Jane and Joe usually don't do much every Tuesday."

The alternatives you gave are usually not used for quoting someone.
