Question on "referred" in passive voice

Hi Teachers:

Can I say:

"This book was referred by my friend." (My friend told me before this book was good.)

Do I have to use "referred to" in the sentence? I couldn't find an example in the dictionary.

"This book was referred (to me) by my friend." (My friend told me before this book was good.)

With or without 'to me', this sounds wrong to me.

I would accept 'I was referred to this book by my friend', meaning that my friend sent me to this book to find answers.

However, the intended meaning seems to be This
