Question on numbering a list-like structure and another question

Hi. Please help. Where should I place the numbers for this list-like part, which is underlined? Is example sentence 1 or 2 correct in numbering the underlined part?

1. You should give the animals (1) clean water, (2) right shelter and (3) the right food.
2. You should give the animals (1) clean water, (2) right shelter and the (3) right food.

Also, is this sentence correct? Should there be the definite article before the phrase "right shelter"? Thank you in advance.

You should give the animals clean water, right shelter and the right food, so they can be healthy.

You should give the animals (1) clean water, (2) the right shelter and (3) the right food. 'Right' is a very vague word which you should replace: You should give the animals clean water, adequate shelter and nutritious food, so they can be healthy.
