Question on alternate histories.

I'm trying to describe a historian's look outside of his own culture:

Tacitus was one of Rome's less innate historians, with his Historiae IV and De origine et situ Germanorum being good examples of the events that took place outside of Rome.

It's the 'less innate' that I struggled to write, and I'd love to hear some alternatives. Thanks.
