Question on adverbs on narration in present

Hi teachers,
The students have changed the underlined verbs from a previous text in past to present, as shown, as a narrative device.
My question is, shouldn't the blue words be changed too?

I do not talk to him very much at the hospital. I look at his head and arms and legs and body very carefully. Then I write the important things about him in a little book. A nurse helps me. Merrick looks at her sometimes, but she does not smile at him or talk to him. I think she is afraid of him. I think Merrick is afraid too, because he is very quiet.

At four o’clock I take him back to the shop in a cab. The next day I look in the shop window again, but the picture is not there.

Thanks in advance.

No, I think they still apply ( then = next, not 'at a past time'). What would you suggest?

Hi Mister Micawber,
Thank you for your reply.
No suggestions at all. Sorry, I only thought 'then = at that time'. I dindn't think as, 'then = after that, next, afterwards.'
