question on adjective and one more

Hi,
I don't particularly care about the content of the phrase below but to ask you a question, I have written it.

They spend their lives on concrete, slatted metal, or wire mesh floors.

The only form I am uncomfortable seeing is "slatted metal". Could one have written it differently?

Also, Is this correct?

Slatted metal is fine. - -> delete the indefinite article ("a") It is hard to determine if it this phrase would be correct in a larger context, though.
