question of a sentence

Dear all,
The current (electricity) has gone for a long time.
How long has current gone? or
How long has it been that current has gone? I am always confused with correct questions.
Context
Somebody has gone somewhere. I mean this person is not seen here for a long time. so question is..
How long has he gone? Is it right question?
