Question mark or period

Hi teachers,

I just came in to ask you if you would like a cup of coffee
Does this sentence need a question mark at the end or just a period and why?

Thanks in advance

Hi, A period. It's a statement about a question. It's not a question.

That's what I thought, but I found the sentence with a question mark at the end in a book. Thank you for your answer Clive.
Have a nice day.
