Question in "be"

Hello
Look at this simple sentence:
- He is a genius.
Is "is" in that sentence auxiliary or ordinary verb?
Thanks

Hi, It's not an auxiliary. It's the main verb. I wouldn't describe 'be' as an ordinary verb.

I appreciate your reply.
But it's considered as an auxiliary verb in Present Progressive, isn't it?

Yes.
( But that's not the tense you were asking about in your original post. )

I forgot to ask something.
If "is" in my sentence in my first post is an oridinary verb, why is the question form is:
- Is he a genius?
Because I know that the verb should be an auxiliary to be moved into the first of the sentence (Is).
Am I right?

Hi,

The verb 'be' is unusual in a lot of ways.

Penicillinthe verb should be an auxiliary to be moved into the first of the sentence
Forms of "to be" (even when it's a main verb) are an exception to that 'rule'.

Hello again

I got another question related to my main question, is "been" in this sentence below ordinary or auxiliary verb:
- I've been playing basketball for a week.

I think it's ordinary verb, am I right?

Thanks
