Question from Word Power Easy

The book indicated that

"Maybe we're not as rich as they, but I bet we're a lot happier"

Why is it they? instead of them???

Both options are open nowadays, but many grammarians find 'them' too informal, while others find 'they' slightly hyper-formal. I always suggest the safe road: "Maybe we're not as rich as they are , but I bet we're a lot happier
