Grammar

Question from the following sentence, which I encountered from a book.

In thi following definition(from Word Power Made Easy), I have difficulty understanding "to helping those in need"

Altruist: one who loves mankind and shows such love by making substantial financial contributions to charitable organizations or by donating time and energy to helping those in need.

Shouldn't it be "to help those in need"? or is it just a osetric grammar that only professional knows?

A few verbs will accept both forms of complementation:

Like doing
Like to do

However, 'donate' does not seem quite right or marginal at best—

donate time to help
(?) donate time to helping

—and I think that it is writer error.
