Question doubt
Hi teachers,
Woman: Yes, of course I do. But may I ask you something first?
Tom: After the examination, please. Just concentrate on my questions for the moment. First of
all why are you leaning English?
Is this what the question should be according to the previous conversation?
What was Tom's first question to the woman?
Is this what the answer should be according to the question?
He asked her why she was learning English.
OR
It was why she was learning English.
If both are correct, could you tell me why please?

If you intend to use reported speech form, I believe it should be "He asked her why she was learning English."
If you intend to use direct speech form, I believe you should say, "It was, 'Why are you learning English?' "
Whether or not you should consider "First of all" as part of the question is another matter. I really have no idea about that!
