Question about 'wasted'. Unit 6

Hi Teachers,

Based on this sentence, 'Baxter wasted very little time on social formalities'.

The following explanations were given to me for the underlined word in the sentence.

a) Baxter was practically uninterested in social formalities.

b) Baxter felt that time spent on social formalities was not necessary.

My question is, could 'used inappropriately' be a good synonym for 'wasted' in the context?

Thanks in advance
