Question about the word"To rise"

I have a question.
There are some words meaning "rise" of the percent in the sentence below and the writer of this article chose the different word respectively such as "surged","added" ,"climbed" and "rose",though they have all the same meaning.
Could you let me know why the writer did so?

Earlier in Asia, Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index surged 2.2 percent to 14,462.41 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 1 percent to 21,636.85. South Korea's Kospi climbed 0.8 percent to 1,922.50 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.7 percent to 5,166.50.

For variety's sake and clarity's sake. Those are the reasons we learn and use synonyms. They can also indicate nuances of difference: 'surge' is a more dramatic change (2.2%) than 'add' (only 1%).

It generally is boring and is often poor style, but it is also often necessary and unremarkable.
