Question about the word 'lone'

Hi,

I saw the following sentence in my text book.
He is the lone scholar in his field of study.

What impression do you get from the word 'lone'?

Text book says that he is isolated.
Is it right?
Don't you the impression that he is the only one scholar in his field?
