Question about tense

Hello. Thanks for helping me to improve in my English. I have the folowing sentence.

"Our best moments were wasted because some people claimed that they had the right to decide for us and force us to do anything they said."

I'm talking about something that happened in the past. Shall i use all the verbs in simple past?
